It is with great sadness that the North Hills School District and transportation contractor ABC Transit, Inc. announce the passing of longtime school bus driver Nancy Von Vreckin.

“Miss Nancy,” as she was known to many, was a nearly life-long resident of the North Hills and NHSD’s most senior driver, driving students of the district for more than 40 years.

Up until her passing on Oct. 11, 2021, Ms. Von Vreckin was the driver of bus No. 366, transporting students to and from Ross and West View elementary schools, North Hills Middle School and North Hills High School.

She loved her job as much as the kids loved her. When she spoke of the children she drove, she referred to them as her kids. Ms. Von Vreckin looked forward to seeing her students, and it bothered her when she couldn’t. The students put a smile on her face just as she put a smile on theirs.

“From climbing over the hillside at work to get plants, to dressing up for Halloween, to driving the buses, Nancy absolutely lived life to its fullest,” said ABC Transit VP of Operations Todd O’Shell. “She had such a huge heart and loved her friends as family.”

“Nancy had many, many likes and very few dislikes,” O’Shell continued. “Her loves were for cooking and her birds, but especially just sitting out back having a cocktail, reading a good book and working in her garden. She could go out to pull a weed or two and finish hours later. She joked and called her yard work ‘therapy.’”

Nancy was loved by many and will be missed tremendously by her family, friends, students, parents and ABC Transit family.

“We are all better people for knowing her,” concluded O’Shell.

Counselors are available in our schools if your child needs assistance or someone to talk to in the coming days or weeks.

NHSD sends our deepest sympathies and heartfelt thoughts and prayers to Ms. Von Vreckin’s family and friends during this difficult time.
