Town Hall on Indian mascot scheduled for June 22

North Hills School District will be hosting a town hall on Wednesday, June 22 to give the school board an opportunity to listen to input from community members and alumni on the district's Indian mascot.

The town hall will begin at 6 p.m. in the North Hills Middle School auditorium. The event will not be streamed live.

To speak at the town hall, you must be a resident, taxpayer, employee or alumni of NHSD. This includes current students entering seventh grade or older. Comments will be taken from residents and employees first, and from alumni nonresidents as time allows.

Speakers must also pre-register by 12 p.m. on June 22 using this link. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. Once the town hall begins, only those registered to speak will be permitted to do so.

Comments for the board are also being accepted online at this link. Please do not email the board or school board secretary Lori Rieger directly. Use this form.

If attending the town hall, please read the following carefully:

  • You must be a NHSD resident, taxpayer, employee or alumni to speak at the town hall.
  • Current students who wish to speak must be entering grades 7-12 next year.
  • Comments will be taken from residents and employees first, and from alumni nonresidents in the order in which the speaker signed up.
  • This town hall is strictly to gather community input about the mascot. There will be no board member comment or discussion, and no motions or action will be taken.
  • Each person will have two (2) minutes to address the board. Groups of two or more who designate one person to speak on the group's behalf will have three (3) minutes. The board reserves the right to reduce this time limit should there be a large turnout for public comment.
  • No one person may comment more than once.
  • Attendees are reminded to be respectful of differing opinions.

A court reporter will be present at the town hall and an official transcript will be provided to all board members. Board members will review the transcript along with online comments to determine next steps and the best course of action. The topic will be discussed at a future public school board meeting.
