Middle School student, Ross Elementary teacher positive for COVID-19

PITTSBURGH -- We have two new district COVID-19 cases to report:

  • A North Hills Middle School student who was last in school on Nov. 4.
  • A Ross Elementary School teacher who last in school on Nov. 10.

It was several days after the middle school student was last in school before symptoms developed, the student was tested and the positive result was received. As such, further action by the district is not necessary.

The Ross teacher remains asymptomatic today but was tested at the recommendation of the teacher’s secondary place of employment where someone tested positive for COVID-19.

While this teacher was in school Monday and Tuesday this week, the Allegheny County Health Department (ACHD) has reviewed the details of the case and does not believe anyone, including students, who came in contact with this teacher this week was in close contact as defined by the CDC and is at-risk of contracting the virus.

The teacher followed all health and safety protocols while in the building and was, like all students and staff, wearing a mask and following social distancing guidelines at all times. As a result, no additional action by the district is necessary.

We know this is a difficult time for everyone, especially as cases climb in Allegheny County and across the state. Please know we continue to follow the guidance of the county’s most knowledgeable health officials at the ACHD.

Today’s two cases bring our total case count to 34 since the school year began, but please remember, the overwhelming majority of these cases were not contracted in our buildings.

Our health and safety plan continues to ensure COVID-19 is not spreading in our schools in the Hybrid operational model.
