PITTSBURGH -- North Hills Middle School history teacher Larry Dorenkamp has been awarded the James Madison Fellowship for Pennsylvania by the James Madison Memorial Fellowship Foundation.

The $24,000 award will help fund Dorenkamp's graduate study of American history to obtain his master's degree.

James Madison Fellowships recognize promising and distinguished teachers while supporting further study of American history.

Fifty-three fellows were selected from each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, and the nation’s island and trust territories this year.

Dorenkamp, along with middle school teacher Alexander Martinez, was also awarded a summer fellowship from the Ashbrook Center at Ashland University in Ohio.

Dorenkamp and Martinez will participate in a week-long graduate-level U.S. government and history course tuition-free later this summer as part of the fellowship.
