Board votes to discontinue use of Indian chief logo, keep Indians name

Posted Thursday, October 6, 2022

The NHSD Board of Education voted Thursday night to discontinue the district’s use of the Indian chief logo while keeping the name “Indians” as the identifier for the district's athletic teams.

Board members voted 7-2 with Deanna Philpott and Elizabeth Nease voting against Resolution 2022-04, which was introduced at the Sept. 15 board meeting.

As the resolution states, the district will now work with a graphic artist to establish district logos and images for district use, establish guidelines for acceptable graphic identification of the district and its athletic teams, and post those guidelines on the district website prior to the start of the 2023-24 school year.

Additionally, items throughout the district with the existing Indian chief logo, including signage and uniforms, will be replaced when it’s time under the normal replacement cycle.

Resolution 2022-04 was drafted from community feedback gained at the district's town hall held in June. The feedback included an online survey that allowed community members, including current students, and alumni to submit comments digitally.

Results from the survey and the official transcript from the town hall were shared publicly in August and can be viewed at this link.

Resolution 2022-04 can be read in its entirety here.
