West View Elementary closed Thursday due to nearby gas leak, All students to attend virtually

Posted Wednesday, January 24, 2024

West View Elementary School will be CLOSED to students and staff on Thursday, January 25, following a gas line leak near the school.

The leak was discovered earlier today. Peoples Gas responded to the scene, turned off the gas line and determined the school was safe for students and staff to finish out the school day.

However, with no gas, there is no heat and no hot water so the building will be closed tomorrow. Students will attend school virtually as they do on a Flexible Instructional Day. The day will count as a school day and will not not need to be made up later.

Teachers will post assignments on Google Classroom and students should complete work independently from home. Students must confirm attendance by submitting this form.

If you need special accommodations, please contact your child’s teacher. Families should also contact their child’s teacher as soon as possible if they do not have home internet access.

Teachers will work normal school hours tomorrow and can be reached via email or through ClassDojo.

Work to repair the gas line will begin Thursday morning. We are hopeful the repair will be completed and are planning for school to reopen as scheduled on Friday. However, please know the potential exists for an extended school closure if the leak is larger than anticipated at this time.

Also know this gas leak is unrelated to the ongoing construction at West View, which will continue tomorrow despite the building closure.

Please contact your child’s teacher with any questions or concerns.

Please note: This gas leak impacts West View Elementary School ONLY. All other schools will be open and operate as normal!
