Flexible Instructional Day for all students Wednesday, Oct. 27

Posted Monday, October 25, 2021

NHSD will hold a flexible instructional day for all students this Wednesday, Oct. 27.

This is due to a bus driver shortage as a result of the scheduled funeral for longtime NHSD school bus driver Nancy Von Vreckin. Ms. Von Vreckin drove for North Hills for more than 40 years and many of her closest friends were also her colleagues and are current bus drivers for the district.

Our transportation contractor, ABC Transit, Inc. has notified us that 15 of our large buses will be unavailable for afternoon runs on Wednesday because the drivers of those buses plan to attend the funeral. This essentially leaves more than 2,700 students without transportation home on Wednesday so a flexible instructional day is our best option.

NHSD has up to five flexible instructional days or FIDs to use each school year as approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Education prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. Assignments are provided through Google Classroom for students to work asynchronously.

Teachers and staff will prepare students in school on Tuesday, providing them with specific instructions so they know what to expect on Wednesday.

This planned FID will also prepare our students and staff for any future flexible instructional days needed as a result of winter weather or other unplanned building closure.

Additional details specific to Wednesday’s FID can be viewed here.

A.W. Beattie Career Center will be open as scheduled on Wednesday but students are responsible for their own transportation. Transportation will be provided as scheduled to private and parochial school students on Wednesday.
