North Hills gymnasts compete in first-ever meet

Posted Sunday, January 9, 2022

Three North Hills High School gymnasts competed in their first-ever high school meet Friday night.

Ninth-graders Riley McElhinney. Sophia Murgie and Abbey McCann competed as independents against Pine-Richland, Fox Chapel and North Allegheny at Trinity Gymnastics in Gibsonia.

The girls did well with Sophia scoring an impressive 9.1 on vault with Riley scoring an 8.7 and Abbie an 8.55.

The girls will compete in additional meets on Jan. 12 and Jan. 19 at Jewart’s Gymnastics, and Jan. 28 at Monaca Turners Gymnastics with the hopes of qualifying for the WPIAL Gymnastics Championship, which will take place at Moon Area High School Feb. 11-12.

North Hills does not sponsor a girls gymnastics team but last October, the NHSD Board of Education approved sponsors so North Hills students could compete as individuals during the designated PIAA winter sports season as current PIAA/WPIAL policy allows. The sponsors are hopeful North Hills could form a girls gymnastics team next year.
