Fall Sports and Spectators: Who can attend?

Posted Thursday, September 10, 2020

PITTSBURGH -- North Hills School District fall sports officially kick off Friday night, Sept. 11, with the varsity football team’s season opener vs. Shaler at Martorelli Stadium. Watch the game live here.

The district will follow it’s COVID-19 Return to Play Health and Safety Plan approved by the school board on June 30, 2020, as it has since fall sports began.

Under the plan, interscholastic athletic event participants and attendees including spectators are grouped into three tiers as follows:

  • Tier 1 (Essential) - Student participants, adult supervisors, event staff, medical staff, security and officials
  • Tier 2 (Essential) - Parents/guardians of student participants
  • Tier 3 (Non-essential) - Visitors and spectators

Current guidance from Allegheny County and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania states no more than 25 people including athletes, coaches, officials, spectators and gameday personnel shall be permitted at indoor events, and no more than 250 people including athletes, coaches, officials, spectators and gameday personnel shall be permitted at outdoor events.

As such, the following is in effect until further notice:

Varsity Football
Only Tier 1 and a select group of Tier 2 individuals are permitted to enter varsity football games hosted by the North Hills School District. Tickets will not be sold at the gate. Visitors and spectators are not permitted.

Girls Volleyball
Only Tier 1 individuals are permitted at NHSD-hosted volleyball games. Adding Tier 2 attendees would exceed the 25 person maximum since games are held indoors.

All Other Fall Sports
Tier 1 and Tier 2 participants and attendees are permitted to attend athletic events hosted by the North Hills School District as long as the total number of attendees does not exceed the outdoor maximum gathering limit of 250 people.

To bring the action to more fans, the athletics department has launched a new YouTube channel where they plan to stream events live when possible and post recordings. As stated in the plan, the district will continue to monitor and evaluate guidance provided as it relates to spectators and make adjustments as necessary. The addition of Tier 3 visitors and non-parental spectators is contingent upon changing state and county guidelines.

When in attendance, spectators must wear face coverings at all times and follow social distancing guidelines. Seating areas, including bleachers, may be marked to adhere to occupancy limits and to allow for at least six feet between those not in the same household. Restrooms will be open but concession stands will be closed.

There is a bill currently awaiting Gov. Tom Wolf’s signature that would allow school districts to establish their own facility maximum capacity for indoor and outdoor events. The district is working on a plan should HB 2787 become law and additional information will be released as necessary.
