Posted Tuesday, January 19, 2021

PITTSBURGH -- NHSD recorded 15 new COVID-19 cases between Jan. 11 and Jan. 18.

The cases were added to the district's COVID-19 tracker with dates from Dec. 21 through Jan. 17 as follows:

  • North Hills High School student on Dec. 21
  • 3 McIntyre Elementary School students on Jan. 5
  • Highcliff Elementary School student on Jan. 5*
  • 2 McIntyre Elementary School students on Jan. 6
  • North Hills High School student on Jan. 10
  • North Hills Middle School teacher on Jan. 10
  • Ross Elementary School staff member on Jan. 11
  • Ross Elementary School staff member on Jan. 12
  • McIntyre Elementary School student on Jan. 12
  • North Hills Middle School teacher on Jan. 14
  • Ross Elementary School teacher on Jan. 16
  • North Hills High School student on Jan. 17

Presumed positive cases are marked with an asterisk.

Since the district was operating virtually until Monday, Jan. 11, the only cases included in each building’s 14-day rolling case count are those with dates of Jan. 11 or after.

While additional cases may remain active because they are still within the 10-day active window as defined by the CDC, they occurred while our buildings were closed and in virtual. After a closure/virtual time period, the building reopens with a case count of zero.

This is now visually represented on our online COVID-19 Tracker.

When will we close a school?

NHSD will only close a school when the building reaches the threshold of cases in the most recent 14-day period as defined by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. Thresholds to close for our schools are as follows:

Please note the above is state guidance. NHSD will consult with the Allegheny County Health Department before making the final determination as to whether a building must temporarily close and shift to virtual.

When a school closes, it will reopen for in-person instruction as soon as cleaning and contract tracing is completed. This could be just 1-2 days.

Reporting COVID-19 Cases

To ensure NHSD has the most accurate COVID-19 case counts, please continue to report all positive and presumptive positive student and staff member cases to the school principal and/or nurse.

We are hearing from our families sooner than the Allegheny County Health Department and appreciate your continued prompt communication.
