North Hills School District named United Way Champion School District
The North Hills School District has been honored as a United Way Champion School District, a recognition of the outstanding service and community impact demonstrated by its students and staff.
This marks the inaugural year of the United Way of Southwestern Pennsylvania’s Champion School District Initiative. The designation is awarded to districts that show exceptional collaboration with United Way and a strong commitment to programs that positively impact both students and the broader community.
Janice Sauers and Kevin Platz from the United Way of Southwestern PA attended the North Hills School Board meeting on Thursday, April 10, to formally present the honor. The recognition included a commemorative banner, now proudly displayed within the district.
“This honor is a testament to the dedication and hard work of our students, clubs, and staff who continuously go above and beyond to support the North Hills community,” said Superintendent Dr. Patrick J. Mannarino.
Several school-wide events contributed to the district receiving this designation, including the annual Trunk or Treat, Hilltop Holiday Town, and December’s “Don’t Be a Grinch, Buy a Sweet Treat” fundraiser.
The Student Council and Hands for Service organized Trunk or Treat, raising funds for Make-A-Wish and UPMC Children’s Hospital. High School Class Officers and the AFS Club led the Hilltop Holiday Town and A Night Around the World events, which provided support to North Hills families in need during the holiday season.
The United Way fundraiser was a collaborative effort by the High School Class Officers, Sew Fabulous Club, Diversity Club, and Middle School Ambassadors, raising $550 in support of the United Way’s mission.
As part of the application process, the district also submitted a video showcasing its service events and community involvement. The submitted video is featured below.
Present at the board meeting for the official recognition were NHSD Director of Student and Community Engagement LaMont Lyons, and students Jocelyn Sauers, Janiya Cassell, and Keegan McElhinney. Assistant Superintendent Dr. Beth Williams and NHSD Board of Education President Allison Mathis were also in attendance and are pictured above.
