Students from North Hills High School and North Hills Middle School were among those recognized during a countywide Stand Together event held April 16, celebrating youth-led efforts to promote mental health awareness and reduce stigma.

The event, organized by the Allegheny County Department of Human Services, brought together middle and high school students from across the region to showcase projects developed through the Stand Together program. The initiative empowers students to take an active role in addressing the stigma surrounding mental health and substance use disorders, encouraging open conversations and peer support within their schools.

Representing the North Hills School District, students participated as part of a network of youth leaders trained to create meaningful change in their communities. Stand Together teams typically consist of students who collaborate on campaigns, events, and outreach efforts designed to normalize discussions around mental health and connect peers with resources.

The recognition event served as a culmination of their work throughout the school year. Students presented their projects and shared the impact of their initiatives, which often include awareness campaigns, peer-led discussions, and school-wide activities aimed at fostering inclusion and understanding.

Through participation in Stand Together, students gain not only leadership experience but also a deeper understanding of the challenges their peers may face. The program has shown measurable success in improving attitudes toward mental health and increasing students’ willingness to seek help when needed.

For North Hills students, the recognition highlights their commitment to building a more supportive and informed school environment—one where conversations about mental health are encouraged and stigma is actively challenged.
