A magical run through the WPIAL 5A softball tournament came to an end on Wednesday, but the season is not over for North Hills.

After taking down two of the top three teams in the Class 5A tournament, the North Hills softball team took on the top-ranked defending champion Shaler Titans. The Indians started strong, recording multiple hits in the first two innings and scoring the first run of the game. Shaler then answered back in the bottom of the second before taking a 3-1 lead in the third.

North Hills continued to battle and cut the deficit in half, but the Titans responded with two runs of their own to make the score 5-2. Then, in the sixth inning, a grand slam by Shaler powered a five-run frame that iced the game, delivering Shaler its second consecutive WPIAL championship.

For North Hills, a second-place finish is the program's best WPIAL result since its championship in 2021. Their Cinderella run saw the Indians become the lowest seed to reach a 5A title game since 2018, and one of only four double-digit seeds to reach the championship game since softball expanded to six classifications in 2017.

But even though this WPIAL run is over, the girls’ season is not. The top four teams in the WPIAL 5A bracket qualify for the PIAA tournament, which begins on Monday, June 1.

The opponent for North Hills to begin the state tournament is DuBois, the winner of the District 6/8/9 subregional. As the higher seed, the Beavers will host Monday's game at Heindl Field in DuBois (11 Parkway Dr, DuBois, PA 15801) at 2:00 PM. The winner will move on to face either Northern York or Thomas Jefferson in the quarterfinals.

Additional information for Monday's game and the state tournament can be found on the PIAA website.

Congratulations to the softball team on a great run in the WPIAL playoffs, and good luck on Monday!
