McIntyre Elementary School launched Read Across America Week with a special read-aloud from a familiar face.

Dr. Amy Mathieu, the North Hills School District’s Director of Elementary Education, visited McIntyre to read “We Are Definitely Human” by X. Fang, the National Education Association's (NEA) featured book connected to this year’s Read Across America theme, “Champion Kindness.”

Read Across America Week 2026, held March 2-6, centers on the national theme "Create & Celebrate a Nation of Diverse Readers," with a special emphasis on championing kindness throughout the month of March. The National Education Association initiative encourages schools to share inclusive, diverse and engaging books that inspire a lifelong love of reading while fostering empathy and understanding among students.

Dr. Mathieu’s visit carried added meaning for the McIntyre community. She served as principal of McIntyre Elementary for 21 years, from 1998 until her promotion to director of elementary education in 2019. Returning to read to students offered a full-circle moment, blending her longstanding connection to the school with the district’s continued commitment to literacy.

“We Are Definitely Human” tells a humorous and heartfelt story that reinforces themes of kindness, belonging and compassion — a perfect fit for this year's focus. Students gathered to listen, laugh and reflect on how small acts of kindness can make a big difference.

Throughout the week, students at McIntyre and across the district will participate in literacy-focused activities designed to celebrate reading and highlight diverse voices and stories. Read Across America serves as a reminder that building strong readers goes hand in hand with building a strong, caring school community.
