Students represent North Hills at annual UnCommon Conference
On Friday, November 8, a group of North Hills middle and high students proudly represented the district at the 5th Annual UnCommon Conference hosted by South Fayette High School.
The transformative event brought together 35 schools to focus on Joy, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (JEDI) and empowered students to become changemakers in their communities.
The day was packed with engaging activities, thought-provoking sessions, and unforgettable moments. Highlights included:
- Keynote Presentation: Emmy Award-winning director Emmai Alaquiva and DJ Selecta inspired attendees with their creativity, energy, and call to action for embracing diversity and equity in all aspects of life.
- Building Bridges through Stories: Ebtehal Badawi shared her powerful “Pittsburgh Builds Bridges Journey,” encouraging students to foster connections and build inclusive communities.
- Interactive Activities: Students participated in workshops ranging from hands-only CPR training to Henna art booths, blending fun, creativity and practical skill-building.
North Hills students stood out for their active engagement, contributions, and enthusiasm throughout the event. They shared ideas, collaborated with peers from across the region, and embraced opportunities to reflect on how they can bring the spirit of JEDI into their daily lives.
"Events like the UnCommon Conference remind us of the potential our students have to lead positive change,” said North Hills Director of Student and Community Engagement LaMont Lyons. “We are proud of their dedication and commitment to making North Hills a more inclusive and joyful community and look forward to seeing how our students use the knowledge and inspiration gained from this event to create an impact at North Hills!"
