Regan Schall, an eighth student at North Hills Middle School, has taken first place in the 2026 National Radon Poster Contest, sponsored by the American Lung Association in partnership with the Conference of Radiation Control Program Directors. Regan’s entry, titled "Boo to Radon," earned her a $1,000 scholarship and national recognition for her creative and informative work.

The national contest highlights the health risks of radon gas — a colorless, odorless, radioactive gas that is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States and the top cause among people who have never smoked. The poster and video contests are part of a broader effort to encourage more families to test their homes, as radon exposure has no immediate symptoms and can only be detected through testing.

Regan advanced to the national level after winning first place in the Pennsylvania Radon Poster Contest, marking the second year in a row she has been recognized at the state level. Other national poster winners include a second-place entry from Missouri and a third-place winner from Iowa.

American Lung Association leaders say youth voices like Regan's help spread awareness of radon’s dangers and encourage simple, life-saving actions like home testing.
