North Hills High School looking to grow Diversity Club
North Hills High School is looking to grow its Diversity Club under the direction of the district’s new Director of Student and Community Engagement, LaMont Lyons.
Mr. Lyons is looking for students to help plan and shape the future of the club, which will support initiatives that promote equity, cultural competency and inclusivity at the high school and across the district.
The club aims to:
- Support, teach, mentor and develop students into leaders in their respective communities
- Empower students to create an inclusive and equitable environment for all
- Prepare students to work effectively and collaboratively in diverse spaces through cultural competency
To accomplish these goals, the Diversity Club will engage in activities and discussions that focus on four critical areas:
- Awareness for varying levels of bias, fear and comfort among individuals
- Understanding that individuals have the power to initiate change through their actions
- Increased interaction with people different than oneself
- Taking leadership roles in service projects and programs that serve the cause of global and cultural competencies to ensure diverse perspectives
The group will embrace and spread the following motto:
“Do No Harm”
- By Actions - We commit to not causing harm through our actions, fostering a safe and respectful environment for all
- By Words - We pledge to use language that is inclusive and respectful, avoiding harmful speech
- By Thoughts - We strive to cultivate positive and inclusive mindsets free from prejudice or bias
This commitment to implement "Do No Harm" districtwide will be a primary focus.
Students began meeting with Mr. Lyons this week to brainstorm ideas and talk about ways to get others involved. If you are interested in joining the Diversity Club, contact Mr. Lyons.
