Heather Pelat

The North Hills School District held its first School Climate and Culture Council public meeting on Sept. 30, 2024 in the North Hills Middle School library.

Director of Student and Community Engagement and chair of the council, LaMont Lyons, led the meeting, sharing updates from each building about student leadership, engagement, behavior and initiatives focused on improving school climate.

Mr. Lyons also highlighted district-wide strategies aimed at supporting mental health, enhancing equity and fostering stronger community connections including the Do No Harm initiative. His complete presentation can be viewed here.

Dr. Donald Sheffiled, cultural competency advisor to the district, joined via video conference and echoed Mr. Lyons’ thoughts.

North Hills High School senior Lyla Schafer-Hughes also addressed those in attendance. She spoke about the diversity club at the high school and her involvement, touching on the environment at the high school, her own experiences and ways she hopes to make a difference.

Several community members also spoke during public comment at the conclusion of the meeting. One spoke about their child’s perspective and experience in the district, while offering helpful insight to administration. A student spoke about creation and participation in a club at the middle school. Mr. Lyons and district leaders are reviewing feedback and suggestions and will share updates as available. THANK YOU!

The next meeting of the School Climate and Culture Council is Monday, Nov. 25 at 6 p.m. in the Highcliff Elementary School library. The final 15 minutes of the meeting will again be reserved for public comment. Community members are welcome to attend.
