NHMS students compete in Mock Trial at LaRoche University

2025 NHMS Mock Trial
Heather Pelat

Seventh and eighth grade GATE students competed in the Northern Area Gifted Consortium's Mock Trial event once again this year. This year, students from 13 different area schools competed against one another at LaRoche University on Tuesday, March 11.

Both North Hills teams – plaintiff and defense – argued their cases to a win for the second year in a row!

The mock trial case is presented to students in the fall and they get to work, reading and researching so they are prepared to take their case to court and compete against other area schools. Roles on the teams include opening and closing attorneys, direct and cross attorneys, and witnesses.

At the end of the trial, students from the opposing side honor two students from each team as best attorney and best witness. Honored this year were Isabelle Brown, (best attorney, plaintiff), Hudson Pierce (best witness, plaintiff), Daniel Huynh (best attorney, defense), and Masoyoshi McGahey (best witness, defense).

The North Hills Middle School Mock Trial team is under the direction of Erin Lankes.

Students are already excited for next year’s trial, whether it be at the middle school or high school for the current eighth graders.
