Lightner, Diehl earn WPIAL titles, 10 advance to PIAA Championships

The WPIAL Individual Championships were held on Wednesday, May 14, and North Hills came away with eight medals, two WPIAL champions, and 10 state qualifiers.

The girls' 4X800 relay, comprised of Gwen Barkovich, Eliana Borne, Kayla Flanigan, and Ayla Werner, got things started for North Hills with a seventh-place finish to earn a spot on the medal stand.

Jack Martin and Gama Mogire were next on the stand with three total medals. Martin earned fifth place in javelin, while Mogire picked up seventh place in the 300 hurdles and second place in the 110 hurdles.

North Hills earned two more silver medals in addition to Mogire's, as the boys' 4X800 relay (Avery Dixon, James Dunlap, Ryan Humenik, and Kayden Lightner) and Logan Ilnicki (discus) both finished in second place.

To cap off the day, two North Hills athletes took home gold medals as WPIAL champions. Brody Diehl won the boys' triple jump, while Kayden Lightner won the boys' 800M.

Of those who earned medals, the individuals and relays heading to the PIAA Individual Championships include Lightner, Diehl, Mogire, Ilnicki, Martin, and the boys' 4x800 relay. The state meet will be May 23 and 24 at Shippensburg University. Live results can be found on MileSplit.
