North Hills School District is the Metropolitan Opera Company’s newest partner in its HD Live in Schools Program.
The program allows students to attend live HD satellite-feed broadcasts of Met Opera performances with no admission charge, and just $3 for bus transportation. Before each Saturday matinee at Cinemark North in McCandless Crossing, there is an 11:30 a.m. pre-opera activity in the Middle School LGI Room.
The Metropolitan Opera also provides educational resources to enhance students’ understanding/appreciation of the operas, such as comic book synopses, core content lessons, and Google Hangouts with cast and crew of the Met Opera. All of the HD operas have subtitles.
North Hills is one of only two school districts in Pennsylvania and 53 districts nationwide to be selected to participate in the program.
The program is administered by our GATE Department.
This year's operas are as follows:
- November 9: Puccini’s Madama Butterfly (Grades 5-12)
- November 23: Phillip Glass’ Akhnaten (Grades 6-12)
- December 7: Mozart’s The Magic Flute (Grades 2-8)
