High School Students Advance to State Speech and Debate Competition
Nickolas Bartel and Michelle DoNorth Hills High School senior Michelle Do and junior Nickolas Bartel won top honors at the Pittsburgh region’s Pennsylvania High School Speech League contest, and they will compete at the state tournament in March at Bloomsburg University. They are the first North Hills students to advance to the state event in more than a decade.

Michelle won first place and was named district champion in the Poetry Interpretation event, and Nickolas won third place in the Congressional Debate event.  

The club seeks to develop students’ skills in conducting effective research as they learn to craft logical, fluid and well-constructed arguments, expand their knowledge of topics not commonly discussed in their everyday lives and encourage critical analysis of topics in our world.

Secondary teacher Dawn Zahorchak oversees the club.
