Arts Alive Celebrates its 45th Year on May 5

North Hills School District will host the 45th annual Arts Alive program sponsored by Linda Mitzel Photography on May 5 from 5 to 9 p.m. at North Hills High School. The annual program celebrates the creative accomplishments of students in kindergarten through high school. Arts Alive is free and open to the community.

“Arts Alive is a celebration of our students’ talents and creativity,” said Dr. Patrick J. Mannarino, superintendent. “This annual event provides an excellent opportunity for our community to experience the many opportunities available within North Hills School District.”

The North Hills tradition features student work from a variety of mediums such as pottery, paintings, drawings, sculpture, photographs, school publications and writing projects as well as student work from the family and consumer science and technology education departments and performances from the music department.

This year’s event features many new additions to the annual event including:

  • A one-night-only, exceptional music performance featuring NHSD music teachers. The district’s K-12 music teachers will grace the high school auditorium stage to perform several pieces with a constellation/sky theme arranged by elementary band teacher Jeff Lucas.
  • A Middle School Mother’s Day STEAM flower sale featuring plants grown by family and consumer science students in pottery containers made by art students with 3D-printed tags created by technology education students utilizing computer aided design software. Proceeds from the sale will benefit North Hills Community Outreach.
  • An array of culinary options from the World Language Department including a variety of cultural fusion dishes in the high school cafeteria. Bring your family and enjoy dinner!
  • An art gallery opening-style event in the high school rotunda with juried exhibitions from high school artists and pottery, photography and film demonstrations. Some artwork, including pottery pieces and photography, will be available for purchase. From 5 to 7 p.m., Coffee Buddha will offer coffee, espresso beverages and hot cocoa in exchange for a donation to the district’s Art Department.
  • North Hills Sculpture Contest that features dreamcatchers decorated and designed by various clubs and activities in a districtwide project reminiscent of the Carnegie dinosaurs visible throughout downtown Pittsburgh.
  • Third annual North Hills Game Fest showcasing board games and video games created by district students in Room G13.
  • Hands-on arts activities for children and demonstrations by various area arts organizations.
  • Elementary and middle school art displays as well as quilts crafted by high school family and consumer sciences students in the gymnasium.
  • Choral and instrument performances in the auditorium and courtyard areas and poetry readings by the high school Poetry Club.
