Safety & Security Measures

Safety & Security Measures

NHSD continues to refine its crisis response planning and to be vigilant about the safety of its students and employees. Over recent years, the district and building level safety teams have spent considerable time and effort in planning and practicing safety and security measures appropriate for addressing a major critical incident. Among these measures are:

  • Close coordination and emergency planning with Ross Township and West View Borough police and fire departments
  • Close coordination with Allegheny County Health Department
  • Close coordination with the local chapter of the American Red Cross
  • Comprehensive district-wide crisis management plan
  • Individual school crisis plans updated within last twelve months that include evacuation, lock down, shelter-in-place and parent reunification plans
  • Employee training in crisis management and communication, including shelter-in-place, smallpox response, threat assessment, front office security, crisis communication and table top exercises conducted in all schools
  • School security officers present in the middle and high schools
  • Strict visitor controls and employee IDs
  • Camera/buzz-in entry via single door access is operational in all schools
  • NHSD anonymous tip line at 412-318-1111
  • Identification of HAZMAT sites in Allegheny County and revision of school crisis plans to address HAZMAT issues
  • Additional technologies for internal communication
  • CPR and first-aid training for all employees

Emergency Preparedness & Support

North Hills School District takes proactive measures to protect the safety of all our students and staff members. Our plan is made in concert with all other local emergency preparedness plans.

The school district and all NHSD schools and facilities have safety and security plans. The plans are designed with the help of school security staff members, as well as local law enforcement, emergency management, and public health officials. Plans are regularly reviewed and updated. These plans include procedures to respond to critical incidents, such as fire or weather emergency, and school personnel practice these drills regularly.

NHSD works in close collaboration with local, state and federal health, safety and emergency personnel to develop plans to develop and maintain plans for coping with a variety of emergency response situations. These plans involve efforts to protect all students while they are at school. NHSD is also a key resource for facilities and transportation in regional emergency situations.

The actions taken during any type of emergency situation depend a great deal on the specifics of the incident. For example, one or more schools may evacuate, lockdown or initiate a shelter-in-place response, according to the nature of the threat. The main objective is the protection of the students and staff members. School administrators have a variety of “tools” to use and have received training on how to work with each of these. The ability to remain flexible is a key component of each school’s plan and building preparations. In addition, NHSD would follow direction from public safety officials.

If you have questions about your student or about your school’s safety and support responses, please contact your student's building principal. Everyone in NHSD continues to work to make all our schools safe and secure environments for all students and staff members.
