Five Themes of Social Studies: Country Reports

Resources:

Books

Search the Ross Elementary Library Catalog (library.nhsd.net) to locate non-fiction books related to the country you are researching. Non-Fiction books are identified with a Dewey Decimal Number (000 – 999) and are organized by subject, which means where you find one book is most likely where you will find more.

Encyclopedia

You can use World Book Encyclopedia to locate information about your country as well. World Book Encyclopedia is available for you to use in print form (book) and online through the Ross Library Webpage. Keep in mind that there is still valuable information in the print encyclopedia. However, be aware that some information such as population will be out of date and you may find more accurate information online.

Atlas

You can use a World Atlas to locate information about your country utilizing the maps, charts and graphs inside. There are many different types of maps and charts inside an atlas, each which illustrate different information for us to use. Be sure to read the headings, labels and map keys to make sure you know exactly what each map, chart or graph is sharing with you. Just like the encyclopedia, an online resource may provide with more up-to-date information in some instances.

Almanac

An almanac provides a brief overview of key facts about a given country. The easiest way to navigate an almanac is to utilize the coloring of the pages with the key on the back of the book. Considering the most up to date collection of almanac is from 2005, an online almanac will provide you a great way to compare how your country of study has changed during the past few years.
