2011 Distinguished Alumni
Timothy Hoffman and Judith Ference Olson
A pediatric cardiologist and a superior court judge were selected as the inaugural recipients of the North Hills School District Distinguished Alumni Awards. Dr. Timothy Hoffman, Class of 1984, and the Honorable Judith Ference Olson, Class of 1975.
Dr. Timothy Hoffman is the Medical Director of the Heart Transplant and Heart Failure Program at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. In addition, he serves as an Associate Professor of Clinical Pediatrics, Division of Cardiology at The Ohio State University College of Medicine. He has held numerous fellowship and faculty appointments and has been published in several research publications.

Dr. Hoffman was profiled in the North Hills School District’s 2005-06 Annual Report. At that time, he and the transplant team had recently performed a heart ‘domino’ transplant involving the youngest living heart donor. Domino heart transplantation occurs when one patient undergoes heart-lung transplantation, and his/her original heart is then given to a second heart-transplant recipient. These surgeries were performed on infants age 5-months and three-months-old, respectively.

Superior Court Judge Judith Ference Olson was elected to the Pennsylvania Superior Court in 1999 after serving as an Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas judge from 2008-2009. Prior to becoming a judge, she was a partner in the law firm Schnader Harrison Segal & Lewis LLP where she served as chairperson of the firm’s Antitrust and Trade Regulation practice group.

Judge Olson earned her law degree from Duquesne University School of Law and her undergraduate degree from St. Francis College. She has been recognized by “Law & Politics” magazine as a Pennsylvania Super Lawyer for business litigation and as one of the top 50 female lawyers in the commonwealth. Judge Olson has a long-standing commitment to community service with a variety of organizations including the American Heart Association, Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, the Diocese of Pittsburgh and others.
